Child Pneumonia Outbreak: Why It's Hitting China So Hard And Could It Spread Overseas?
Dr. D. Srikanth, Sr. Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad explains child pneumonia outbreak in China

On 13th of November 2023, Chinese authorities from their National Health Commission reported an increase in the incidence of respiratory diseases in China – predominantly affecting their pediatric population. When probed by the WHO for further details regarding epidemiological and clinical information and laboratory results, China indicated an increase in the pediatric patient inflow to hospitals due to Mycoplasma pnaumoniae pneumonia as well as RSV, Adenovirus and influenza viruses all of which are common causes of pediatric flu like illness.

Winter season is usually  always associated with an increasing trend in respiratory illnesses. Given that fact, it’s not surprising to see the raise in the incidence of such illnesses. However, as compared to previous years, this year has seen a higher incidence than before. This could be attributed to the relaxing COVID-19 restrictions in China as in other countries. It is speculated that the reduction in common infections due to COVID 19 precautions has resulted in a state of “immunity debt” – which could be the reason for the pediatric populace being more affected when compared to older individuals. Although most infections of mycoplasma are self limiting, China also reports increased drug resistance to Azithromycin – which is used to treat mycoplasma pneumonia in more serious cases, than other countries.

Pneumonia upticks are also being noted in other countries. The Govt of India is also closely monitoring the outbreak and taking necessary cautionary measures. However it would be in the interest of the citizens to exercise due diligence. Vaccination, Social distancing, hand washing and masks have protected us during the COVID pandemic and still remain proven measures to prevent respiratory illness. Avoid sending a sick child to school or to large gatherings to curb the spread of the diseases. After all prevention is better than cure.

What's your reaction?
