Police have launched a murder investigation after a fan died before England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.

London: Police have launched a murder investigation after a fan died following an incident outside Wembley Stadium before England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales on Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called after reports of an assault outside the ground at 1820 GMT and that six people, understood to be Welsh, had been arrested.

"Officers and London Ambulance Service attended. A man, believed to be aged in his 40s, was taken to a north London hospital suffering from head injuries. He was pronounced dead at 20:50 hours," a police statement said.

The man was a Wales and Cardiff City fan, according to a statement on the Championship club's website.

"Out of respect for the family of the supporter, the sensitivity of the situation and until full details and circumstances are ascertained, no statements will be made until deemed fit by proper channels," the club said.

Police said an investigation was being carried out by officers from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

England won the Euro 2012 Group G qualifier 1-0. Ashley Young scored the only goal from Stewart Downing's cross in the 35th minute to put England six points clear at the top of the group.
