New Delhi: Sporting Club de Goa defeated Vasco SC 1-0 in the first match of the second I-league that kicked off at Nehru Stadium on Friday in Margao.

Sporting's match against state rivals and newly promoted Vasco seemed to be meandering towards a tame draw but in the stoppage time Sporting exploited a sleeping Vasco defence.

Nigerian Junior Obagbomire scored from close range off a cross from defender Chandrashekhar Chinta to ensure full three points for Sporting.

Vasco, too, were close to scoring on two occasions but their strikers failed to find the net. Sporting also had their chances in regulation time and came close to scoring twice but their strikers also failed to hit the target.

First Joychandra Singh's header was stopped by Vasco goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani and later Joseph Pereira managed to deflect a cross from the right by Wilton which hit the cross bar.

Sporting were the better side throughout the game but in defender Covan Lawrence, Vasco had a man who stood up to every challenge that came his way.

However, just when it looked that Vasco would share the honours with their more fancied rival, Chinta sent a cross to Junior from the left flank and the Nigerian made no mistake.

Despite the loss Vasco had something to cheer as Lawerence was declared the Man-of-the-Match.
