South Africa are making an effort to avoid becoming the first host nation not to advance from the group stage.

Bloemfontein: South Africa will make five changes for its final World Cup group game in a last-ditch effort to avoid becoming the first host nation not to advance from the group stage.

Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says he is making three switches to the side that will play France in addition to the two forced upon him by the suspension of goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi.

Bafana Bafana need to win convincingly and hope there is a winner in the other Group A game between Mexico and Uruguay.

Parreira says "the reality is we can't depend upon ourselves ... but this does not affect our motivation."
