Our objective is to win the World Cup: Maradona
Maradona says he is looking forward to big changes with the side.

New Delhi: Diego Maradona, the coach of the Argentine national team, declared that people will find a huge change in the national team when his reign begins. He also affirmed that Argentina's objective is to win the World Cup.

Diego Maradona told the press on Wednesday to look forward to big changes with the side compared to when Alfio Basile was in charge.

"You will see a change in the national team. When we begin to work, there will be tactical changes, of players; here the player will be spoilt, and very happy to be part of the national team, and they will defend this shirt like it deserves," said Maradona.

Maradona claimed that Argentina's objective is to win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

"The path to follow is to finish in first place in the World Cup, not to be in the top four. Whether we manage to do this depends in great part on the players, with our support of course. But I don't like the idea of settling with a top four finish."

"El Diez" admitted that he is "enjoying" his new role, and that he had "been waiting for the opportunity for a very long time."

Even if Lionel Messi wasn't released by Barcelona for the friendly with Scotland, Maradona insisted he will play a key role for his side in the future.

"I want (Messi) him to have freedom to play; so that he can satisfy us on the field; for him to play for the team, but when it comes the time for him to finish, for him to do this, for him to be a team player, a player who can steer the team forward. For him to be the conductor," he affirmed.

Maradona will officially debut as the coach of Argentina against Scotland in Hampden Park on Wednesday.
