New Delhi: The National Football League kicked off with Mohammedan Sporting snatching a thrilling encounter against JCT in the Capital on Friday.

A roaring Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi ran amok when Mohammedan's Habibur Mondal clinched the winner in the dying stages of the game to hand his club a precious win in the opening match, the Bengal side beating JCT 2-1.

Punjab's JCT took the lead in the 29th minute when Renedy Singh curled in a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area after prodigious striker Sunil Chhettri was fouled.

But JCT failed to capitalise on a dominating start, missing chance after chance to allow the Mohammedan side with a whiff of a chance equalise.

Kulothungon struck for Mohammedan in the 67th minute, spurring the side on to go for the kill after being dominated for most of the game.

The match began with end-to-end attacking by both the sides, trying to impose on each other right from the start of play.

But a last-gasp strike from Habibur Rahman Mondal who met a cross with an angular header, sealed victory for Subhash Bhowmik's Mohammedan side 2-1 in a pulsating draw.

Mohammedan escaped a draw and a point, ending with three with a win instead.
