New Delhi: Mohun Bagan claimed their 12th Federation Cup title by beating Sporting Clube de Goa 3-1 in penalties in the final in Kolkata on Saturday.
Bagan goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee pulled off a splendid penalty save in the tie-breaker to propel the Bengal side to victory after the match ended 1-1 after regular time before 70,000 fans screaming inside the Salt Lake stadium.
Both sided cancelled each other in the midfield, with eye-catching skills and few chances from either making the encounter nerve-wracking in the dying stages of the game.
The extra-time sizzled with chances galore from both sides as Sporting were the first to stamp their authority with a couple of chances, but Jeremiah's shot on the turn sailed over the bar, while Dudu failed to score as the shot was well wide.
Baichung Bhutia sizzled up front for the Bengal side, continuing his good run of form, a delightful chip taking the Sporting defence by surprise, which was tipped over the bar by keeper Felix D'Souza.
However, the Goan club was the first to put their names on the score sheet as early as the sixth minute when Harmanjot Khabra put them ahead as his shot flew in the net.
Bagan's equaliser came in the 27th minute when player of the tournament Baichung Bhutia set up Vidal to head home, the score that was to stand 63 minutes on.
Dempo won their play-off game against Mahindra United to clinch third place.
