Manchester United are reportedly facing difficulties in completing the signing of Australia wonderkid James Overy. As per The Sun, the Red Devils have already offered a deal to the 17-year-old talent. However, the move is currently being investigated by both FIFA and the Premier League due to certain violations.
Earlier this year, Overy joined non-league club Newton Abbot Spurs in March. Under FIFA rules, he was not allowed to sign for another club within 16 weeks as it would be considered a ‘bridge transfer.’ With the Erik Ten Hag-coached side trying to sign Overy within the mentioned period, the agreement was delayed.
Other Premier League clubs, including Everton and West Ham, were previously looking to sign James Overy. Manchester United only showed an interest when the player was in the country. The aforementioned report also claimed the Red Devils had no history with the player before he came on trial. The club’s officials will now be hoping that the 17-year-old is allowed to sign for them with FIFA’s approval. However, a move won’t likely be completed until the smaller details are cleared.
James Overy previously represented Perth Glory’s U21 side before shifting to England from Down Under with his family. The Overy family reportedly found a house in a Cheshire suburb favoured by top players. Given the young defender has already chosen Old Trafford as his next destination, it no longer makes sense for West Ham to continue monitoring Overy’s situation.
James Overy isn’t the only wonderkid who has been on Manchester United’s radar. They recently expressed their interest in conducting a deal with Arsenal for their youngster Chido Obi-Martin. The Athletic shared a report claiming Manchester United were ‘exploring’ to sign the 16-year-old. The move was pursued after his schoolboy terms with Arsenal had expired. He was already given an offer by the Gunners which the 16-year-old refused. The young Denmark star then visited Manchester United’s training facility at Carrington earlier last week. At the time, it was said that the two parties were discussing a move but no concrete decision had been made.
Manchester United recently competed in two pre-season friendlies in Norway and Scotland. They lost the first match 0-1 to Rosenborg before winning their next against the Rangers 2-0. Erik ten Hag’s men are now set to travel to the United States where they will face their Premier League rivals Liverpool and Arsenal. They are also scheduled to square off against La Liga side Real Betis.
