Manchester United have laconically denied media reports that star striker Wayne Rooney is on his way out at Old Trafford. A spokesman for the English club told BBC on Wednesday: "Wayne Rooney is not for sale."
Speculation became rife after British tabloids reported a couple of weeks ago that Rooney had handed in a transfer request but was refused by manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who announced his retirement on Wednesday after spending 26 years in the managerial role.
It was the second time in three years that the striker expressed a strong desire to up sticks. According to reports, Rooney is on the radar of big clubs such as Chelsea, German giants Bayern Munich and France's Paris St Germain.
27-year-old Rooney, who has already spent nine years at Old Trafford, has two more seasons left on a five-year contract.
