Manchester (England): Playing in front of the home crowd at Old Trafford, Dimitar Berbatov of Manchester United put the home side in front when he got a John O'Shea pass into the back of the net.
But he came back in the 51st minute to score off a rebound.
The final nail in the Celtic coffin was driven in by Rooney off a Carlos Tevez pass, 14 minutes before time.
Replays did later show that Berbatov was offside when he scored.
The win leaves United on top of Group E and well on the path to the knockout stage.
Arsenal beat Fenerbahce 5-2 In the Champions League
Fellow premier league club, Arsenal took on Turkish side Fenerbahce on Tuesday night.
Emmanuel Adebayor and Theo Walcott scored two goals,11 minutes into play, to put the Gunners ahead.
Abou Diaby made it three for the visitors when he got one past the keeper and into the back of the net.
Fenerbahce did pull one back in the 77th minute.
The night ended with Aaron Ramsey getting this 20 yard shot into the back of the net, 5-2 for Arsenal who now lead Group G ahead of Dynamo Kiev.
