Liverpool: Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva will miss the rest of the season after he damaged left knee ligaments in his team's League Cup quarter-final win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The Brazil international was hurt in a seemingly innocuous attempted challenge on Chelsea's Juan Mata in Tuesday's 2-0 win. He played on for a couple of minutes before collapsing and getting carried off on a stretcher. Liverpool said later that a scan had showed that Lucas injured his anterior cruciate ligament and needed surgery to repair the damage sustained.
The 24-year-old Lucas has had an impressive campaign for Kenny Dalglish's side and news of his lay-off will come as a big blow to the Scot as the midfielder had become an integral part of his side.
Lucas reacted to the injury blow via Twitter, saying: "I am really sad with the news because I was enjoying a lot on the pitch ... I am sure I will come back stronger and I will achieve everything that I dream with the LFC shirt. I am sure I'll never walk alone."
Liverpool are already without captain Steven Gerrard, who has not played since end of October due to an ankle infection, but have recalled Jonjo Shelvey from Blackpool to cover for the loss of Lucas. The Scottish boss has moved to bring 19-year-old Shelvey back from Bloomfield Road, where the youngster was enjoying a successful loan period, scoring six goals in nine games
Shelvey arrived at Liverpool from Charlton for £1.7 million in the summer of 2010.
Liverpool's next match is away to Fulham on December 5 in the Premier League.
