New Delhi: Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed he does not want to succeed Steve McClaren as England manager.

Mourinho has been out of football since leaving Stamford Bridge in September but is believed to be waiting for a club rather than a national post.

The FA, meanwhile, has begun his search for a replacement for McClaren, who was sacked on Thursday after England failed to reach Euro 2008.

England only needed a draw against Croatia to seal a place in the championship, which is to be played in Austria and Switzerland, but the defeat meant they will be missing from a major finals for the first time since the 1994 World Cup.

"He's put real hard work into this job. He's been dedicated to it, but in the end, not qualifying for Euro 2008 comes up short," Brian Barwick, FA Chief Executive, said while disclosing that McClaren has been sacked.

Meanwhile, McClaren sais that he was proud to be associated with the England football team.

"First of all can I say that this is one of the saddest days of my career. Eighteen months ago was the proudest day of my career and I was honoured to be the England head coach and for 18 months I have enjoyed every minute. It is a sad day today to be relieved of my post, but I can understand the decision by the FA and I have still this morning got a huge disappointment for the people who are really losing out," Steve McClaren said.
