Amid rumors of several transfer negotiations, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shared an update on some of his players’ contract situations. The Dutchman informed that three Manchester United players have had the options for an additional year, beyond the summer, triggered by the team management. English right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Swedish center-back Victor Lindelof and midfielder Hannibal Mejbri’s contracts have been extended by another 12 months. Talks with the French duo of Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial are still ongoing, Ten Hag informed. “We are talking with Rapha Varane and with Anthony Martial. And we have triggered the options on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof and Hannibal,” Ten Hag said at a press conference yesterday, as per Manutd.com.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined Manchester United from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019. Victor Lindelof signed for Manchester United in 2017. Hannibal Mejbri, on the other hand, was initially recruited to Manchester United’s youth side, before cementing his spot in the first-team squad recently. Having been pressed on Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial’s situation, Erik ten Hag replied, “I think that is an internal discussion between the club and the player.”
Speculations have been rife over Raphael Varane becoming a free agent in the summer with the Frenchman’s contract at Manchester United set to expire a year earlier. The Athletic had previously reported that during Varane’s latest absence from the Manchester United squad, there has been a sense that the Red Devils could end up selling him at the end of this season, if desired. The article also claimed that Manchester United could even decide to let Varane go for free if they wanted to save a year of his salary, which is understood to be around £13 million.
After capping off a glorious stint at Real Madrid, Raphael Varane signed for Manchester United in 2021 in a deal worth an initial £34 million rising to £42 million, along with other potential add-ons. The 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning defender has so far featured in 79 matches for Manchester United across all competitions.
Raphael Varane was one of Manchester United’s finest performers during Erik ten Hag’s debut season with the club. The 30-year-old, however, has been lower down the pecking order in the team, finding himself on the bench quite often in recent times. Out of Manchester United’s 20 matches so far in the ongoing Premier League, Varane has featured in 11 games and started seven times.
