Bhaichung named Indian footballer of the year
Decision announced at the Annual General Meeting of the AIFF.

New Delhi: Indian skipper Bhaichung Bhutia has been named as the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Player of the Year for his services to Indian football.

The decision was announced at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the AIFF.

The Sikkimese Sniper is only the second Indian star to be honoured with this prestigious award twice with the legendary IMVijayan having won it thrice. Last year, the award was won by Sunil Chhetri.

Bhaichung guided India to win the AFC Challenge Cup ’08 and thus qualify for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.

The skipper led from the front having scored three goals and had a few assists to his name which fetched him the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament Award.

Earlier this year, Bhaichung was also honoured with the Padma Shri, which stands fourth in the civilian awards, bestowed by the Government of India.

He also went on to play in the prestigious 'Goal 4 Africa' charity match where he brushed shoulders with some of the finest footballers in the business and managed to score twice.
