New Delhi: Former England captain and Real Madrid 'Galactico' David Beckham made his much- anticipated Major League Soccer debut on Thursday, coming on as a second-half substitute as the Los Angeles Galaxy lost to DC United 1-0.

Beckham entered the game at RFK Stadium in Washington in the 72nd minute to the cheers of the sellout crowd of nearly 46,000. The midfielder had 14 touches and took two freekicks in the game.

While his presence excited the crowds, Luciano Emilio's strike for DC United was enough to ensure Beckham's debut ended in a defeat for his side.

"We knew what they could do. We knew that they're strong up front and they're quick and they're good on the ball and they capitalised on that. They got a goal and stuck in there. We had a couple of chances at the end but we're disappointed," Beckham said after Galaxy lost 0-1 away to the Washington side.
