Akshay Kumar and Radhikka Madan starrer Sarfira, a retelling of Suriya’s National Award winning Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, may not be creating waves at the box office but has been receiving appreciation from the audience as well as the film fraternity. Taking to social media, Tamil actor Suriya had penned a heartfelt note on Sarfira stating, “Sarfira will always be an important film for all of us! Akshay Kumar Sir thank you for choosing Sarfira as your 150th film (sic).” He also attended the special screening of the film along with wife Jyothika.
Now in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Radhikka spills the beans on Suriya’s response to the film, which is also directed by Sudha Kongara much like the original one. “He’s very kind and gracious and a man of few words. He told me, ‘You did a great job. The film is very nice.’ And that meant a lot. He’s a very quiet guy. Sudha ma’am has worked with Suriya in the past and she told me that if this is how he has reacted to our film, it means that Sarfira is really good,” she tells us.
Radhikka reveals she was rather ‘scared’ of how he would react to Sarfira and this is what stopped her from looking at him during the screening. “I couldn’t look at him while he was watching the film because I was too scared. I told myself that if he likes it, he’ll tell me and if he doesn’t, then he’ll keep quiet. I’m glad that he said something. It felt amazing. Everybody came together like a team, believed in Sarfira and celebrated it for what it was,” she recalls.
Sarfira saw her stepping into the shoes of Aparna Balamurali, who played Sundari ‘Bommi’ Nedumaaran, the protagonist’s wife in Soorarai Pottru. Apart from receiving wide critical acclaim, she also won Best Actress at the 68th National Film Awards. And though Radhikka and Aparna often chat, the former shares that she made it a point to not exchange any notes with her.
“Aparna and I talk a lot on Instagram. She’s so kind. I told her that I’m an ardent fan of hers for life and that she’s phenomenal. I also told her that I can’t match up to her. I knew that the only thing I can bring to the table is my own self and my own take. And I don’t know if Aparna has watched Sarfira yet. I’ll check on her immediately,” she states.
The Patakhaa and Angrezi Medium actor, in fact, had planned on not watching Soorarai Pottru at all. “The first thought was not to watch it so that I don’t take anything from it but then I don’t know why, I just saw it. I asked myself, why am I scared of watching it? I’m glad I did because my natural instincts were very similar to Aparna’s. That’s when I realised that I need to find a different tone for Rani because the audience had already watched Soorarai Pottru. And a big credit goes to Sudha ma’am too,” says Radhikka.
