Recently, on Wednesday, the administration of the Silchar Medical College and Hospital withdrew its controversial advisory asking female doctors, students and staff to avoid situations where they are alone and also to refrain from going out at night.
The advisory was issued on Monday after the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital
The advisory was issued by Silchar Medical College Superintendent Bhaskar Gupta, where he advised the female doctors not only to avoid roaming at night but also the hostelers to avoid going out of the hostel or lodging room at night. The female doctors, however, before leaving should inform the authorities first, the advisory stated. Bhaskar Gupta also advised the female staff to stay away from strangers and suspicious people. The advisory urged increased security, CCTV coverage and prompt investigations.
He also mentioned that, during duty hours, doctors are expected to be emotionally well-composed, remain alert and interact tactfully with the public to avoid attracting pointless attention from unscrupulous individuals. However, the Junior Doctor’s Association (JDA) claimed that the advisory made students deeply saddened and ashamed. They called the advisory outrageous and claimed that it failed to address the main aspect. It was noted that the advisory was issued for the safety of the doctors, students and hospital staff.
The advisory faced a huge backlash when the students claimed that instead of these measures mentioned above, it would be more beneficial and effective if security measures were improved. However, a controversy erupted over this which forced the administration to withdraw the advisory and cancel it. However, the institution has also claimed that a new advisory will be issued as early as possible.
