Shrikant Jichkar: The Former Maharashtra MP With 20 Educational Degrees

Success is not based on luck. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most importantly, love for what you do or learn to do. And nothing is more credible than the success story of Shrikant Jichkar, a man with 20 degrees, who even cracked the UPSC exam twice, and later resigned as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

In addition, he has earned a Masters degree in Business Administration and International Law, a Doctorate in Business Administration, a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and a Doctorate in Literature in Sanskrit.

An exceptionally bright student, Shrikant Jichkar received numerous gold medals during his academic career. According to media reports, he appeared in 42 university examinations between 1973 and 1990 and obtained 20 degrees. After successfully clearing the UPSC examination, Jichkar was selected as a central officer for the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1978.

In 1980, he resigned from the IPS cadre and again took the UPSC exam, this time as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. Soon after his appointment, Jichkar ran for office, won the election and became an MLA. Soon, he was appointed as a minister and was in charge of 14 different portfolios.

He even served as a Minister of State for the Government of Maharashtra. He was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1985. He also served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1986 to 1992 as a Minister of State.

He was a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 1992 to 1998. In 1992, Shrikant Jichkar founded the Sandipani School in Nagpur. Tragically, Jichkar died on June 2, 2004, at the age of 49 after his car crashed near Kondhali, about 50 kilometres from Nagpur.
