Students pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in various Ayush disciplines, including Ayurveda, will now be required to pass the National Exit Test (NEXT) to obtain their degrees. Union Minister of State for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav announced this decision following recommendations from a review committee.
The NEXT exam will become mandatory for students enrolled in the 2021-22 academic session under the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) and National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) Act, 2020.
This decision follows a report submitted by a committee led by Professor Sanjeev Sharma, Vice Chancellor of the National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur. The committee reviewed student concerns and made recommendations, which have now been implemented.
The NEXT exam will be required for licensing and registration in the state or national registers after completing a one-year internship during or following graduation. The exam will assess practical skills through problem-based questions, including clinical case scenarios, images, and videos.
The minister emphasised that students who pass the NEXT exam but have not completed their internship will only be eligible for registration after completing the one-year internship.
The committee, formed on August 12, 2024, was tasked with submitting its report within a month, which has led to the implementation of this new requirement for students starting from the 2021-22 session.
