Lady Hardinge Medical College is considered as the first medical college for women in India. Its tuition fee is Rs 1655 per year. Lady Hardinge Medical college is located in Delhi. It was the year 1911, when King George V came to India. He announced the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi. After this, Baron Charles Hardinge, the then viceroy of British India shifted from Calcutta to Delhi with his wife Winifred Selina Stuart. He noticed that there were no medical colleges in Delhi and no women were there in the medical field. This college was founded in 1914 to honour the visit of Her Majesty Queen Mary in 1911-12. Lady Hardinge, the wife of the then viceroy, was the first to take the initiative for starting this medical college for women as they were deprived of education. It was formally started on 17 February 1916 by the then Viceroy Lord Hardinge. The first principal of this medical college was Dr. Kate Platt. Initially the course was for seven years. In 1935 it was reduced to five years. This medical college has been affiliated with Delhi University since 1950.
