Virat Kohli returned to competitive cricket after a gap of over two months and looked in high spirits as Royal Challengers took on Chennai Super Kings the opening clash of IPL 2024.

Virat Kohli returned to competitive cricket on the opening day of the IPL 2024 that kickstarted with a glittering opening ceremony at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The act on the opening night of the popular T20 league saw five-time champions Chennai Super Kings defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six wickets to start their title defense on a wining note.

RCB captain Faf du Plessis opted to bat first and his team slipped from a rapid start before being rescued by Anuj Rawat and Dinesh Karthik as the duo pulled them to 173/6 in 20 overs. CSK would overhaul the target with ease to finish the match in 18.4 overs.

During CSK chase, Kohli, who managed 21 off 20 after opening the innings for RCB, was captured grooving to the hit Tamil song Appadi Podu from the 2004 movie Ghilli.

That contest was the first for Ruturaj Gaikwad as CSK captain and the youngster says he enjoyed the role.

“I’ve always enjoyed it, never felt it as an additional pressure. I had experience on how to handle it, never felt any pressure, obviously had Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai as well,” he said during the post-match presentation.

RCB captain Du Plessis, who scored 23-ball 35, felt his team were around 15-20 runs short and the pitch wasn’t as difficult as their top-order made it look like in the first 10 overs of the innings. From 41/0, RCB slumped to 78/5.

“Chennai are a very good team in the middle overs, they squeeze you with their spinners. Maybe we were about 15-20 runs short, the pitch wasn’t as bad as we played in the first 10 overs. They were always ahead in the chase, we tried to squeeze and get a couple of wickets, but in the end we didn’t have enough runs,” Du Plessis said.

RCB will have a rest of two days before they host Punjab Kings in their next match on Monday while CSK will welcome Gujarat Titans next on Tuesday.
