As talks continue to circle regarding Steve Smith’s new role as Australia’s opener in the Test format, his former teammate in whites, David Warner seemed to give his fellow teammate a handful during their Big Bash League fixture as the Sydney Thunder took on the Sydney Sixers.

Smith who walked out to bat in the first innings, faced a rather anti-climatic start as the opener for the Sixers. As the players walked out to the field, David Warner who was miced up made a few cheeky comments regarding Smith who had come out to the middle. “Nothing’s distracting him. Nothing ever distracts him,” said Warner.

“He has got a mark on his foot there so he might be fidgety about that,” added Warner knows Smith with the duo having featured for Australia across all three formats.
While Smith did not speak too much, he seemed to be a tad restless as he looked to take guard ahead of the first delivery of the match. “No, that’s not centre, little bit to the right. Mate, if you open the batting you’ve got to mark it properly. One go only. Nah he’s locked in,” Warner looked to take a sly dig at Smith ahead of the first delivery.
Smith was gone for a duck as Daniel Sams managed to put in a shorter delivery which the batter pulled but failed to clear the boundary and Nathan McAndrew took the catch.

Australia’s next Test match will be up against the West Indies which begins on January 17 at the Adelaide Oval where Smith could be featured at the opening slot along with Usman Khawaja while Cameron Green will return to the squad taking Smith’s previous position at number four.
Despite Smith’s duck, the Sixers managed to get the win by 19 runs thanks to the bowling efforts by Steven O’Keefe who chipped in with three wickets dismissing the top 3 of the Thunder which includes David Warner, Alex Hales and Cameron Bancroft.
