Suryakumar Yadav Draws Level With Virat Kohli for Most Player-of-the-Match Awards in T20I History
World's top-ranked T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav has now won 15 player-of-the-match awards in just 64 matches.

Suryakumar Yadav scored his second successive half-century of the T20 World Cup 2024 to star in India’s impressive win over Afghanistan in a Super 8 clash on Thursday. Suryakumar’s effort landed him a Player-of-the-Match award (POTM).

This is the 15th time that Suryakumar has won POTM award in his T20I career and he has thus drawn level with his India teammate Virat Kohli for having won the award for most times in career.

Virandeep Singh (Malaysia), Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe), and Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan) are joint-second in this list with 14 POTM awards each.

India captain Rohit Sharma completes the top-three with 13 POTM awards so far in T20Is.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan crashed to their second defeat of the T20 World Cup 2024 as they were humbled by former champions India. Afghanistan started their campaign with three wins in a row including a thumping win over New Zealand to qualify for the second round.

However, they suffered a big defeat to West Indies in their final Group C fixture to finish second. And then India defeated them by 47 runs in the Group 1 Super 8 opener held at the Kensington Oval.

India posted a challenging 181/8 thanks to a sparkling half-century from Suryakumar Yadav (53 off 28) and chasing the target, Afghanistan were bowled out for 134 in 19.6 overs.

For India Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh shared three wickets in a dominant show with the ball.

Interestingly, all 10 Afghanistan batters were out caught which is the second time in the history of T20 World Cup. Afghanistan were also the first team to achieve this distinction against England at the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar, the world’s top-ranked T20I batter has now scored 220 runs from 63 matches at an average of 44.89 and a strike-rate of 168.06. He has four centuries and 18 fifties to his name.

India will next take on Bangladesh in their second match of Super 8 this Saturday while Afghanistan face Australia.
