Rohit Sharma blazed his way to a record-setting fifth T20I century – the most by any player in the format. Sharma achieved the milestone during the third T20I vs Afghanistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Sharma was coming into his final T20I before the 2024 T20I World Cup on the back of two back-to-back ducks, and after a nervy start, he overcame an Indian top-order collapse to notch up his hundred in a mere 64 deliveries and went on to finish with 121 not out with the help of 11 fours and 8 sixes.
India vs Afghanistan, 3rd T20I LIVE: Rohit Sharma Scores Record 5th T20I Century, Rinku Singh Hits Fifty
Sharma got together for a record 4th wicket partnership of 190 off just 95 deliveries with Rinku Singh who hammered 69 off just 39 deliveries. India were in a precarious situation after losing four wickets in just 4.3 overs with the score at 22 only.
Then Sharma joined forces with Rinku to rebuild the Indian innings and once they got set and got their eye in, went berserk in the last five overs tonking 103 runs in the last 30 deliveries, including a whirlwind 36-run last over bowled by Karim Janat.
Sharma with his historic knock surpassed the likes of Glenn Maxwell, and Suryakumar Yadav, who have four T20I centuries to their name. With this century, Sharma now becomes the only player to have at least 5 centuries in all three formats. He has 10 Test centuries from 54 matches while his ODI hundred tally stands at 31 in 262 matches.
During the knock, Sharma also surpassed Virat Kohli among captains to have scored most T20I runs. Sharma now has 1648 runs in 54 matches he has captained, while Kohli has 1570 runs from 50 matches as captain. Aaron Finch leads the tally for most runs as captain in T20Is with 2236 runs from 76 matches.
