It was a long winding road, but the Mumbai Indians finally achieved their first win this season, under the leadership of new skipper Hardik Pandya as well.
It wasn’t just the individual performances that helped them cross the line but also return to their roots and their identity that aided them in their successful defense of a mammoth 234 against the Delhi Capitals today, believes Ishan Kishan.

“I think we played according to our potential, this is the sort of cricket we are known to play for. It wasn’t easy after the batting powerplay, the fielders go back and we decided that the batting powerplay was the right time to attack the bowlers,” stated a calm and confident Kishan at a post-match interview.
MI got off to a blazing start as noted by Kishan, thanks to him and his veteran opener Rohit Sharma, who took the attack to the DC bowling ranks out the gate, piling up a fiery 49-run outing, along with Ishan’s 42.
But, the real point of difference with the bat, the performance that enabled MI to clinch their comfortable 29-run margin win, was none other than the hard-hitting phenom, Romario Shepherd.

Shepherd went on nothing short of a rampage in the final over of MI’s innings, pummelling Anrich Nortje for sixes and fours galore, notching up 32 runs in the over all by himself.
“He has been working hard (on Romario Shepherd), wasn’t playing, but always gave 100% at the nets. We were looking towards that one over, we know he’s very powerful and has the ability to clear boundaries,” praised Kishan.
Despite DC’s spirited fight, especially from the likes of Prithvi Shaw and the trailblazing Tristan Stubbs, it all proved to be not enough, as MI secured a comfortable 29-run win, and sealed the first win of their 2024 IPL campaign.
