On This Day In 2017: Mumbai Indians Clinch Third IPL Title with Dramatic Last-Ball Win
In a nail-biting finish, Rising Pune Supergiants needed a boundary off the last ball to win the IPL but fell short by a single run. Mumbai Indians won by a thrilling margin thanks to a brilliant run-out by Parthiv Patel.

On this day in 2017, the Mumbai Indians produced a phenomenal performance to clinch their third Indian Premier League (IPL) title. After suffering an early setback against the Rising Pune Supergiants, the Rohit Sharma-led side recorded six successive wins to book a playoff spot. The Mumbai-based franchise enjoyed significant contributions from their star pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Johnson in 2017.

Mumbai lost their Qualifier 1 game to Pune but overcame the Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier. They once again faced Pune in the tournament’s summit clash held on May 21.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. Mumbai looked to post a good total on the board but things did not go quite as planned for them. Mumbai lost both their openers in the third over of the innings.

It was Jaydev Unadkat who picked up both the wickets. The fall of wickets continued for Mumbai, as Adam Zampa dismissed two of their biggest power-hitters including Rohit and Kieron Pollard. More trouble followed as Dan Christian plucked three more to curb Mumbai at 129/8 in the first innings.

Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi began the chase for the Rising Pune Super Giants. They also suffered an early setback after Tripathi was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah.

Seeing his partner depart early, Rahane stepped up massively for Pune scoring 44 runs off 38 balls. He stitched a formidable partnership with skipper Steven Smith. But Mumbai pacers, including Bumrah and Mitchell Johnson, ensured that they kept Pune batters humble.

In the final over of regulation, Pune required 11 runs to seal their maiden IPL trophy. With Steven Smith batting, the odds seemingly favoured Pune. The tides changed completely after Mitchell Johnson dismissed Manoj Tiwary before sending his international teammate Smith packing.

It came down to Pune needing a boundary off the final delivery of the game to seal the IPL crown. Johnson bowled a full-length delivery to Dan Christian who flicked it. They got two runs and attempted a third but Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel was able to hit the stumps just in the nick of time to seal a thrilling one-run victory for his side.
