The Indian international and the Indian Premier League 2024’s title-winning captain, Shreyas Iyer revealed a ‘lack of communication, and some decisions did not go in his favour’ following the ODI World Cup 2023.
Speaking in a video uploaded on his YouTube channel, the batter opened up on his exclusion from the BCCI’s annual central contracts list despite putting up a fine performance with the bat in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 campaign where he scored 530 runs at an average of 66.25 including two centuries and three fifties.
Iyer was not included in the BCCI’s list for the period October 2023 to September 2024 for reasons which suggest that he along with Ishan Kishan had prioritised the IPL instead of domestic cricket.
Speaking on the topic, Iyer revealed that he had plans to take a break after the ODI showpiece event to work on himself physically.
“I had a tremendous World Cup and I wanted to take a break after that, work on my body (and) build some strength around certain areas,” Iyer said in a video on his YouTube page.
“Due to lack of communication, there were some decisions that didn’t go in my favour. But at the end of the day, the bat is always going to be in my hand and it’s on me how to perform and win trophies,” he added.
Despite the exclusion from the Indian team, Shreyas has come out roaring having won the Ranji trophy and leading the Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in IPL 2024 showcasing his prowess with the bat and his ability to lead the side.
Iyer credited the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore for helping him get back his groove with the bat after undergoing back surgery in April 2023, which helped him find his confidence. He suggested that post-surgery he never really pushed himself to bat for longer periods.
“After the surgery, I was at NCA, practising in the nets. I have never batted for so long in my life. I used to always restrict myself from batting in the nets because I complained that the wickets weren’t that great,” he said.
“Suddenly, I just told myself that ‘put yourself in tough situations because the war is won outside the field, not on the field’,” he further commented.
Iyer suggested that he needed to challenge himself more and help himself get out of the rut that he found himself in and now he can see the fruits of his labour having won the IPL.
“When you play with your mind when you challenge your mind to put yourself in tough situations and you decide for yourself whether you’re going to win or not,” Iyer added.
