Kolkata Knight Riders won their third title after dominating the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament. KKR blew away Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final by 8 wickets as Gautam Gambhir reunited with Shah Rukh Khan to get another trophy in their cabinet.
After finishing on top of the IPL 2024 points table with the highest net run rate in the history of the tournament, KKR thrashes SRH twice – in Qualifier 1 and the final – to clinch the title.

High Point of the Tournament
Micthell Starc won the Player of the Match award in both the playoff matches for KKR as he picked up three and two wickets to virtually end the contest inside the powerplay itself.
At the start of the tournament, Starc looked like a ghost of himself running in and getting hit all over the park. Once the rhythm returned, Starc struck fear among the batter as he thundered some unplayable deliveries.
Low Point of the Tournament
Exactly a month before winning the final, Kolkata Knight Riders suffered a humbling defeat to Punjab Kings at their home ground – Eden Gardens.
Thanks to a 138-run partnership between openers Phil Salt (75 off 37 balls) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32 balls), KKR posted a mammoth total of 261/6. But, Jonny Bairstow blasted a hundred as PBKS clinched an 8-wicket win, for the highest successful chase in T20 cricket.
Captaincy Verdict
Shreyas Iyer led his side to the trophy, marshalled his troops confidently on the field and stepped up with the bat when his team needed him to.
Many have credited KKR’s 3rd IPL title win to the return of Gambhir as even the players were quick to thank the backroom staff after their win. Shreyas, who had also led Delhi Capitals to the final, finally has a winner’s medal.
Most Valuable Player
Sunil Narine won the IPL 2024 Most Valuable Player award for his exploits with bat and ball – scoring 488 runs and picking up 17 wickets. The fact that the star all-rounder had a total of 450.0 points and the next-best had 315.5 points speaks volumes about the kind of season Narine had.
Narine has won the win IPL MVP award thrice but the 2024 season has been the most productive for the Trinidadian.
Major Disappointment
Rinku Singh missed out on the Indian men’s cricket team for the T20 World Cup, being named as a reserve player for the 15-man squad. The powerhouse finisher did not have the best of tournaments with a total of 168 runs scored from 15 games at an average of 18.67.
Tournament Verdict
Kolkata Knight Riders were the best team all through the tournament and deservedly won the IPL 2024 crown. With Gautam Gambhir pulling the strings from behind the scenes, he presented SRK with KKR’s third title – two as captain and now one as mentor.
