IPL 2024 Playoff Qualification Scenarios Explained: SRH, CSK in with a Chance to Make Top-two After RR’s Lose 4th Match in a Row; KKR’s Top Spot Assured
RR's loss to PBKS means no other team can displace KKR from the top of the table and they will play Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad on May 21. CSK, SRH and RCB are still in the hunt to book the final two playoff spots. Here’s a look at the possible IPL 2024 playoff qualification scenarios and what the teams have to do:

After Punjab Kings defeated Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati yesterday, the Sam Curran-led side has, for the time being, pushed Mumbai Indians to the bottom of the table. But, more importantly, the RR loss means no other team can displace KKR from the top of the table and they will play Qualifier 1 in Ahmedabad on May 21. Here’s a look at the possible IPL 2024 playoff qualification scenarios and what the teams have to do:

 IPL 2024 Playoff Qualification Scenarios

Kolkata Knight Riders [Q]- KKR have qualified and are at the top of the IPL 2024 points table with 19 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs KKR

The RR loss to PBKS has meant that KKR will now finish the IPL league stages as the table-toppers ensuring their place in Qualifier 1. This will mean KKR will have two chances to make the final. If they lose in Qualifier 1, they will move to Qualifier 2 and await the winner of the Eliminator to have one more crack at the final. Even if KKR lose their final game to RR, they will finish on 19 points and RR on 18. SRH, even if they win their two remaining games can also reach 18 points.

Rajasthan Royals [Q]- RR are currently placed second in the points table with 16 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs KKR

RR’s fourth loss on the trot and the departure of Jos Buttler (national duty) is proving to be big headache for the Sanju Samson-led side. Even though they are assured of a playoff berth, another loss in their last league game against KKR would mean that will be pushed further down the points table and will have to play the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 to make the final. If RR manage to win over KKR, then they will most likely finish in top two, but if SRH win both their games by big margins, then SRH can displace RR from the second spot. And if RR lose to KKR and SRH also go ahead and lose their last two or at least one of their games and CSK win over RCB, then CSK can displace RR from the second spot.

Chennai Super Kings – CSK are currently placed third in the points table with 14 points

Remaining matches

  • RCB vs CSK

CSK’s equation is very simple. Win their final league game against RCB and seal the playoff spot by reaching the IPL 2024 playoff qualification benchmark of 16 points. If they lose, they need to ensure the margin of defeat is narrow (less than 18 runs if RCB post 200 or not concede defeat before 18.1 overs if they target to defend is 200), so as to keep their net run-rate above RCB’s. An RCB win will take Faf du Plessis’ side level on points with CSK and then the NRR will come into play. However, if SRH go on to lose both their games, then there is chance for both CSK and RCB to go through to the playoff provided RCB win against CSK. NRR will come into play then.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – SRH are currently placed fourth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs GT
  • SRH vs PBKS

SRH have two games in hand and can push for the second spot in the points table to seal a berth in Qualifier 1. For that, they will have to win both their remaining games and then hope RR lose to KKR. If SRH win one of their last two games, even then they will be through to the playoff, leaving the final spot between CSK and RCB. Lose both their games and SRH could find themselves in the NRR talks with CSK and RCB depending on the result of the RCB vs CSK match on Saturday.

Delhi Capitals: DC are currently placed fifth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

  • DC vs LSG

Delhi Capitals’ league stage is done and dusted and they finish on 14 points in 14 matches – losing 7 and winning 7. They currently find themselves in the 5th place, in touching distance of the playoff, but they cannot do anything now, other than hope for other results to go their way. They can only hope for RCB to lose to CSK, so that RCB do not go above them and then hope SRH to lose both their games by big margins (190-run combined defeat) that it pushes their NRR below DC’s. While the first scenario is still possible, the second is highly unlikely – meaning DC’s IPL 2024 campaign is as good as over even though they are still alive mathematically.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB are currently in sixth position in the points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

  • RCB vs CSK

With their fifth win on the trot, RCB are making a late push for a playoff spot and it now boils down to their final league game against CSK – who are also fighting for the playoff spot. A loss will bring curtains to RCB campaign, and a win will keep with a spot in the playoffs. But for that, RCB would need to beat CSK by more than 18 runs (if they score 200) or chase down a target of 200 in 18.1 overs to get their NRR over CSK’s. SRH could still surpass RCB, but If SRH lose their remaining games and do not go beyond 14 points and if RCB beat CSK by the said margin, both RCB and CSK can go through to the top 4.

Lucknow Super Giants – LSG are currently placed seventh in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

  • MI vs LSG

LSG let go of a golden opportunity to keep themselves in the thick of the action of IPL playoff race as their 19-run loss to Delhi Capitals have ensured that they would not be able to touch the playoff qualification benchmark of 16 points. With one game remaining, they can hope to get to 14 points, putting them level on points with the fifth-placed DC. But, due to LSG’s poor NRR it is highly unlikely that they will be able to surpass DC or RCB, CSK, and SRH – all of whom could also end upon 14 points, LSG’s campaign, similar to DC’s, is as good as over even if they are alive mathematically.

Gujarat Titans – GT are currently placed 8th in the points table with 11 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs GT

After splitting points in Ahmedabad with KKR due to the abandoned game, GT officially are out of the IPL 2024 playoff race. With one more game to go, GT can get to 13 points only and the 4th placed team currently has 14 points, so mathematically GT cannot finish in the top 4. However, they can spoil SRH’s bid to the playoff by beating them in their final match of IPL 2024.

Punjab Kings – PBKS are currently 10th in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs PBKS

PBKS became the second team to be eliminated from the playoff race, and with one games remaining, they have moved from 10th to 9th after the win over RR. They will aim to avoid the wooden spoon this year by winning their final league game against SRH.

Mumbai Indians – MI are currently placed at the 10th spot in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

  • MI vs LSG

Mumbai Indians officially become the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoff race, and they will look to avoid the wooden spoon this year.
