After bagging the ODI series in style, Team India is now gearing up to feature in a Test series against South Africa. The opening game of the two-match assignment is slated to begin on December 26, with the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium in Johannesburg hosting the five-day contest. India will look to make the most out of the fixture as they have yet to win a Test series in South Africa. Their best performance came in a 2010/11 tour when the visitors played three Tests against the Proteas. India managed to take an early lead in the three-match series but ended up losing it 2-1.
The Test series against South Africa will mark the return of several senior players to the Indian squad following the ICC ODI World Cup. Captain Rohit Sharma will continue to serve the leadership role, while Virat Kohli will also be seen in action. Among others, Jasprit Bumrah will spearhead the bowling attack, with the spinner duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja earning call-ups as well.
Alongside KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan was roped in as the second-choice wicketkeeper. But the youngster has withdrawn his name, citing personal reasons, with KS Bharat replacing him in the squad. In-form pacer Mohammed Shami was also slated to be part of the travelling unit but has been ruled out due to an injury.
