Franchises Allowed to Retain 5 Players Costing From 11 to 18 Crores INR; No Cap on Indian or Overseas Stars: Report
The total purse per franchise would go up to INR 120 crores. But the catch comes with regards to the order by which players would be retained with each franchise having a total of INR 75 crore being allotted to their retentions alone.

With the fans and franchises alike, waiting for the official announcement regarding the retention rules ahead of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League, some more information has come out regarding the structure of retentions ahead of the season’s mega-auction.

As reported by SportsTak, the retention policy mandates that the franchise can retain as many as five players while also having a right-to-match (RTM) card. A key point to note is that there would not be any cap on the number of Indian or overseas players that could be retained.

The report also suggests that the total purse per franchise would go up to INR 120 crores. But the catch comes with regards to the order by which players would be retained with each franchise having a total of INR 75 crore being allotted to their retentions alone.

  • 1st Retention: INR 18 Crores
  • 2nd Retention: INR 14 Crores
  • 3rd Retention: INR 11 Crores
  • 4th Retention: INR 18 Crores
  • 5th Retention: INR 14 Crores

The first, second and third choice players would be retained for 18, 14 and 11 crores INR respectively. But the interesting point comes with regards to the fourth and fifth choice retentions. Here franchises would have to splash out another 18 and 14 crore INR respectively for their fourth and fifth-choice players to keep in their squad.

This could force franchises to bring more players to the auction table, thus giving other sides a shot and possibly acquiring the services of a talented player to bolster their respective squad for the 2025 season.

With regards to the IPL 2025 mega-auction, there are no updates regarding the dates or venues of the event. But the report claims that it is expected to take place in late November with the event once again to be held abroad with Saudi Arabia as the likely host.

The 2025 mega-auction will see many talents possibly switch teams which will add a new dimension to the IPL. While some exits will be heartbreaking to see, the moves from one side to another could see the fortunes of a side or even a player turn for the better.

The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah had announced a new mandate where players would see an increase in match fees to INR 7.5 Lakhs per game which would also see a bonus of INR 1.05 crores should the player take part in all of the games as well.
