England Skipper Jos Buttler Ruled Out for T20I Series Against Australia; Phil Salt to Lead the Side
Jos Buttler will not be leading the England T20I side for their upcoming series against rivals Australia. Phil Salt will step in to lead the side.

England’s white-ball skipper, Jos Buttler has been ruled out of their upcoming home T20I series against Australia, beginning next week.

The England Cricket Board (ECB), announced the news of his right calf injury being cited as the reason for his absence. As his replacement, Jamie Overton has been called up to the England T20I squad. Additionally, Essex batter Jordan Cox has been added to the ODI squad as cover.

England’s white-ball series against rivals Australia would be the side’s return to limited-overs action following their semi-final defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2024 hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America.

The 33-year-old had sustained the injury during his preparation for The Hundred campaign which ruled him out of the tournament and subsequently missed his domestic side Lancashire’s quarterfinal fixture against Sussex.

The ECB revealed that Phil Salt would be leading the T20I side while it is yet to be seen who would lead the 50-over setup in Buttler’s absence.

England will take on their rivals Australia at home in a three-match T20I series followed by a five-match ODI series. The first T20I game is set to take place on September 11 at the Utilita Bowl in West End, Hampshire.

The 2019 Champions will be keen on bouncing back after a poor performance in the ODI World Cup in India last year. The squad was far from their expected level of performance as they produced arguably one of the worst campaigns set by a defending champion.

Buttler has been a key player in England’s ODI and T20I sides playing a crucial role with the bat. But it will be interesting to see how the England Cricket Board navigate through the absence of the captain, Buttler.
