Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull gave his take on the turning tracks in India for Test cricket and how it will affect young batters like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. The debate regarding the pitches on which the match usually gets over within 2 days has fired up in recent times as the spin-friendly tracks in India also came under scrutiny.
However, the Indian players including skipper Rohit Sharma have always taken a solid stand on that matter and said when the matches got over on pace-friendly tracks nobody creates fuzz on that.
Doull said he doesn’t have a problem with the spin-friendly tracks where the spinners get assistance from Day 1 itself but asserted that it will affect the young players. The cricketer-turned-commentator elaborated that it will be tough for batters like Gill and Jaiswal to match the Test average of legendary Indian players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

“The only thing I would say is how do these modern Indian batters, The Shubman Gills and the (Yashasvi) Jaiswals, get Test match double hundreds? You look at the careers of the previous Indian batters and the careers of these new Indian players, and you’d feel, ‘We don’t expect them to average 55, 54, 53, like the Tendulkars, the Dravids, the Sehwags, and the Laxmans’. That’s because they are playing on surfaces that are more spin-friendly on Day 1,” Doull told Hindustan Times.
He also talked about England’s Bazball cricket and stated he didn’t like the term but surely enjoys the ultra-attacking approach.
“I don’t like the term. But the way they play, I enjoy. They will not change the way they play, and neither should they. It has been attractive; it has been a resurgence of Test cricket. I don’t think they will stop the way they play,” he added
However, Doull claimed that Bazball might work in one or two Test on Indian pitches not over five matches.
“Will it work? It might in a Test or two. I don’t think it will work over a five-Test series. (It’s not) good enough to beat an Indian side. I think we are in for a cracking Test series, and it will be entertaining no matter how it goes, but I don’t think they will be able to sustain it over a five-Test series,” says Doull.
