‘Doesn’t Feel There Is A Weakness’ - Sunil Gavaskar On Rohit Sharma's Vulnerability Against Left-arm Pace
Sunil Gavaskar shared his thoughts regarding the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's suggested vulnerability against left-arm pace.

Indian cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his support for Rohit Sharma amid his struggle versus left-arm pace at the T20 World Cup 2024. Rohit led India to their first Super Eight victory against Afghanistan yesterday, June 20. While India was able to secure a 47-run win in Barbados, the Indian skipper failed to show up with the willow.

Amid all the criticism surrounding Rohit’s abysmal performances against left-arm bowlers, Gavaskar opined that these dismissals should not be considered the player’s weakness. This is what the cricketer-turned-commentator told Star Sports after the game – “If you have scored 10,000 to 15,000 runs and get out maybe 40 times outside off-stump that doesn’t feel there is a weakness.”

Sunil Gavaskar also explained how wickets like these were just part of the game. Speaking further he said, “He [Rohit Sharma] has got out. At the end of the day, batters have some way to get out. If you get out caught behind you can’t say you have a weakness against the off-stump.”

The ex-cricketer also talked about how the Indian captain was a seasoned batter and knew well how to approach the game. “He is an experienced batter, He knows what he has got to do. You cannot really tell Rohit Sharma to change his game because of the angle of the bowler,” he concluded.

While Sunil Gavaskar voiced his support for Rohit Sharma, he also highlighted that he understood why people questioned the Indian skipper’s batting approach. “Yes, sometimes you might say, because of the angle, don’t hit towards the on-side, maybe look to play the inside-out shot over extra cover…But a man who has got so much of tons and tons of experience of playing limited-overs cricket doesn’t need to,” the ex-cricketer concluded.

Playing at the Kensington Oval yesterday, Rohit Sharma put up just eight runs in 13 balls in the first innings. It was the duo of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya who rescued India from a complicated situation by building a solid partnership, deep into the innings.

Suryakumar’s 28-ball half-century helped India reach a total of 181. During the bowling phase, Jasprit Bumrah scalped three players to secure a convincing victory for the Men In Blue. After the game, Rohit celebrated the win with some Indian supporters. He even signed a few items for those fans.

Rohit Sharma will lead India against Bangladesh next. The match will be hosted at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium tomorrow, June 22.
