David Miller Adds Weight to Growing Dissent Against 'Impact Sub' Rule in IPL
Gujarat Titans batter David Miller is the latest star to voice his displeasure at IPL's Impact Player rule.

“How should we get hold of the game? Let’s get our Impact Player substitute!”

When the Impact Sub-rule was introduced in the IPL in 2023, teams warmed up to making the game a 12-a-side contest despite their early skepticism. Apart from naming the first XI, teams would shortlist five substitutes to pick from when needed. By the second season, teams had a fair idea of how to use it, and teams started using it essentially to bolster their batting and sideline the role of a pure allrounder on the side.

This rule’s most significant impact has been the number of runs teams are putting up now. In many ways, from a franchise’ sports entertainment’ perspective, more big hits mean viewers and spectators alike are getting their every penny’s worth. However, from a player’s point of view, things are slightly different, and many have started raising concerns about this concept. Hard-hitting lower-order batter David Miller is the newest member to join this bandwagon.

While addressing a press conference on the eve of the Gujarat Titans’ fixture against the Delhi Capitals in Delhi, Miller made a straightforward point: He isn’t a great fan of the rule.

“The impact player rule, I am not a big fan of it. IPL has been a trial and is obviously creating a lot of hype around it. The game of cricket has always been of 11 players. As Rohit mentioned, it is not the same in international cricket so we should keep the same,” Miller said.

How the Impact Player Rule is Doing Cricket More Harm Than Good

“It’s like having six bowlers and eight batters and taking the allrounders out of contention. I don’t know what they’re going to decide if they want to keep it, but it is obviously difficult for certain allrounders to bowl,” he added.

Miller and several marquee players have also expressed their opinions on this rule. Let’s look at a few more names who aren’t fans of the Impact Sub rule.

I am not a big fan of Impact Sub rule: Rohit Sharma

“I am not a big fan of the Impact Sub rule. It is going to hold allrounders back, eventually cricket is played by 11 players not 12 players. You are taking out so much from game to make it entertaining for people around. If you look just from the cricketing aspect of it I feel guys like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar aren’t getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing,” Rohit had said on ‘Club Prairie Fire’ podcast.

Please remove the Impact Player rule: Mohammed Siraj

“Please remove this Impact Sub thing (laughs). The wickets are already flat, and there’s nothing for the bowlers in it; previously, it used to be slow at times, but the batters now come out swinging at absolutely everything,” Siraj said ahead of RCB’s match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Everything will work as per batter’s convenience: Axar Patel on Impact Sub Rule

“Whosoever is making the rules, they are thinking that everything will work as per batter’s convenience. Obviously, it has been difficult (for the bowlers). According to me, it’s difficult, but obviously, you will have the opportunity as well that you can perform well in that situation; if you have the skills, then how you can use them,” DC allrounder Axar Patel said.

What is the need for [Impact Rule] in IPL: Mukesh Kumar

“If 12 players are not playing at the international level, then what is the need for it in IPL? With 12 players, even if four wickets are down, the next player is not scared of getting out or making the team stable; they come and play their shots. So either the nature of tracks should be changed, or 12 players should not be allowed,” opined DC fast bowler Mukesh Kumar.

We are open to any discussion once the season gets over: BCCI on Impact Sub rule

The players’ opinions compelled the BCCI to act. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has spoken about the raging issue and assured us that the Indian Cricket Board will review the rule once the season concludes.

“Now that such an observation has been made, we will definitely look into it. We will discuss with all parties involved and then take a call. There are various pros and cons to any rule that is in place. We are open to any discussion once the season gets over. Nothing is cast in stone about its implementation,” Dhumal told The Telegraph on Friday.
