The BCCI is expected to announce player retention rules for the IPL 2025 mega auction following which CSK will decide on its strategy.

Chennai Super Kings haven’t heard from their former captain MS Dhoni regarding decision on extending his IPL career. Dhoni was recently vacationing in the USA and is reportedly back in the country with BCCI expected to announce player retention rule ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction.

Dhoni stepped down from CSK captaincy ahead of the start of IPL 2024 with Ruturaj Gaikwad named his successor. The legendary captain played as a wicketkeeper-batter for the entire season that saw the franchise failing to qualify for the playoffs.

CSK are yet to decide on their retention list and is awaiting Dhoni’s call and a formal BCCI announcement on retention rule.

“We are yet to hear from him. Once the BCCI makes a formal decision on the number of retentions, we will have a clear picture,” The Indian Express quoted sources as saying.

Since the last few seasons, there have been never-ending speculations over when Dhoni will bring down curtains on his illustrious IPL career that saw him leading CSK to five titles.

Dhoni has been struggling with major injuries for the past two years. Last year, his movement was severely hampered due to a knee issue for which he underwent a surgery immediately after overseeing a successful campaign. There were reports of him carrying an injury during IPL 2024 too which also meant he couldn’t run for long.

Dhoni batted quite low down the batting order and produced a series of blazing cameos. He has been coy on his IPL future stating it will depend on multiple factors including his fitness and the retention rules.

“There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” Dhoni had said during an event in Hyderabad earlier this year.
