Babar Azam was horribly out of form in the two-match Test series played between Pakistan and Bangladesh in August-September 2024. He got out for a duck in the first inning of the series opener played at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in August and then managed to score 22, 31, and 11 runs in the next three innings. His poor batting show in the home series, which Pakistan lost by a margin of 0-2, invited him a lot of criticism from fans and former Pakistani greats and experts.
Babar will next be seen in action for Stallions in the inaugural edition of Champions One-Day Cup 2024, which is set to start on September 12 in Faislabad. In the six-team tournament, the 29-year-old right-handed batter will play under the leadership of Mohammad Haris.
Ahead of the start of the tournament, Babar took part in a practice match but could only manage to score 20 runs from 20 balls. He was clean-bowled by a local spinner, Mohammad Asghar. The video of Babar getting out in an attempt to play a paddle sweep is now going viral on the internet.
Babar Azam is once again struggling. In the Champions Cup practice match, Babar Azam was bowled out by a spinner. Babar Azam scored only 20 runs off 20 balls, while Shan Masood scored 90 runs off 80 balls before getting out caught. On the other hand, Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood scored 90 runs from 80 balls before getting out.
After the Champions One-Day Cup 2024, Pakistan will face England in a three-match Test series, which is scheduled to start on October 7 in Multan. Babar will be a key player for Pakistan in the three matches, which they must win to keep their chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final alive.
Pakistan is 8th on the WTC 2025 points table after suffering back-to-back defeats against Bangladesh. England, on the other hand, sits in the No. 6 position. The Poms lost the third Test against England by 8 wickets at the Oval on Monday (September 9) and missed out on a chance of finishing the home summer with a 100% win record in red-ball matches.
In the last Test four of Pakistan in December 2022, England managed to get the better of the Babar Azam-led side in all three matches, and they will hope to repeat the same show once again in October 2024.
