The Australian cricket team, who got their second Test against West Indies underway at the Gabba on Thursday, have been hit by a couple of cases of COVID in their camp.

And in a light-hearted moment of celebration following the opening wicket of West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite off Josh Hazlewood’s delivery, the bowler shooed away teammate Cameron Green, who tested positive for COVID.

Green and Australian coach Andrew McDonald reportedly contracted the virus from teammate Travis Head, who tested positive for COVID at the end of the opening Test of the series in Adelaide last week.

Head, however, has returned a negative test result since and is part of the Aussie side named to take on the Windies in the second and final Test of the series.

Cricket Australia had earlier stated that both Green and McDonald would participate in the Gabba Test unless they felt too sick to be involved in the longest format of the game.

“Cameron Green and Andrew McDonald will be separated from the group until they return a negative test,” Cricket Australia said.

“It will not hinder Green taking part in or McDonald attending the match in line with CA protocols.”

Covid protocols permit players to participate even if they do not return negative results in the next 24 hours, but must be kept apart from the rest of the group.

Green was also spotted socially distancing himself from his teammates during the national anthem ahead of the five-day affair against the Windies.

Australia claimed a massive 10-wicket win over the touring Windies at the Adelaide Test to establish a 1-0 series lead in the two-game affair.

Australia managed to bundle out the Windies for just 188 runs in the first innings of the opening Test of the series before notching up a 95-run lead as they put up 283 runs on the board in reply riding on Head’s 119 runs knock.

The Aussie bowling unit struck again as Josh Hazlewood claimed a five-wicket haul to wrap the WI innings for a paltry 120 runs, before the Australian opening pair of Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith completed the run chase without losing any wicket.
