Star Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is on fire against Bangladesh in the ongoing first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 38-year-old cricketer, who picked up three wickets on the third day, dismissed two more Bangladeshi batters in the morning session of the fourth day’s play to take his tally of wickets to five in the second innings. By taking a five-wicket haul in the ongoing match, Ashwin has broken star Australia’s spinner Nathan Lyon’s record of most five-wicket hauls in the World Test Championship (WTC) history.
In 43 matches for the 2023 WTC winners, Lyon has picked up 10 five-wicket hauls, whereas Ashwin now has 11 five-wicket hauls to his name in 36 WTC matches for India.

The five-wicket haul in the second innings is also his fifth five-wicket haul in the ongoing WTC 2023-25 cycle, which has helped him overtake Pat Cummins of Australia and move to No. 1 position.
Ashwin opened his account on the fourth day by dismissing Shakib Al Hasan in his first over and then got the better of Mehidy Hasan Miraz on the fifth ball of the 58th over.
He is the oldest Indian cricketer in history to take a five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
The five wickets have also helped Ashwin break former New Zealand all-rounder Richard Hadlee’s record of 36 fifers and equal Shane Warne’s tally of 37 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket. The overall record of most five-wicket hauls in Test cricket is in the name of Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan, who dismissed five or more batters in an innings 67 times in for Sri Lanka.

The record of taking most wickets in Test cricket is in the name of Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan. The legendary spinner finished his Test career with 800 wickets in 133 matches. Shane Warne of Australia is second on the list with 708 wickets in 145 Tests, and they are followed by England’s James Anderson (704), India’s Anil Kumble (619), England’s Stuart Broad (604), Australia’s Glenn McGrath (563), and Nathan Lyon (530).
