Andrew Flintoff’s Son Rocky Named in England U-19 Squad Against Sri Lanka
Despite being just 16, Rocky Flintoff has managed to impress for Lancashire 2nd XI this season

Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff’s son Rocky Flintoff has received his maiden call-up for the country’s Under-19 cricket squad. Andrew is one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders who is widely known for his heroics in the 2005 Ashes. The Englishman played for the national team for nearly 12 years before hanging up his boots in 2009. Following in his father’s footsteps, Rocky has now earned his place in England’s U-19 squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. The series against the Asian side will comprise three ODIs and has been scheduled for later this month.

Despite being just 16, Rocky Flintoff has managed to impress for Lancashire 2nd XI this season. The youngster made his debut just two days after his birthday, scoring a maiden century in April. Rocky reached the three-figure mark against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, after forming a 39-run partnership with his elder brother Corey Flintoff. He brought up a 151-ball ton against a bowling attack that included former England Lions spinner Jake Lintott.

Just like his brother, Rocky Flintoff has been in the Lancashire academy since a young age. He has played club cricket for teams, including Southport and Birkdale. Both Rocky and Corey Flintoff attend Manchester Grammar School which is also the alma mater for former England players Michael Atherton and John Crawley. The 16-year-old talent has now overtaken his brother as he prepares for his debut with the national team.

England’s U-19 squad features plenty of family connections. They will be captained by Essex all-rounder Luc Benkenstein who is the son of former South Africa batter Dale Benkenstein. The team’s offspinner Farhan Ahmed is the younger brother of England star Rehan Ahmed whereas Somerset’s Thomas Rew is also the smaller sibling of the highly touted James Rew.

England Men Under-19s coach Mike Yardy seemed to be quite content with the team selection.

“We have selected an exciting squad for the series, with a blend of some players who are currently playing in the Vitality Blast and some younger players for whom it will be their first time in an Under-19s squad,” Yardy said.

As for Andrew Flintoff, the former player recently returned to cricket after suffering injuries in a high-speed crash while filming an episode of Top Gear in 2022. He is currently working as a consultant with England for the T20 World Cup 2024. Andrew is also set to coach the Northern Superchargers in the men’s Hundred this summer.
