A Heartfelt Christmas Tribute to Shane Warne; Graeme Smith Urges Nationwide Heart Checks-ups on Boxing Day
The Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan will have fans encouraged to take free heart tests offered at the MCG as tribute cricket legend Shane Warne.

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith remembered cricket legend Shane Warne on Christmas Day and urged everyone to get their hearts checked on Boxing Day.

Warner had died of a heart attack last year, at the age of 52, due to atherosclerosis while holidaying in Thailand.

A private funeral was held in March at Melbourne’s Moorabbin Oval and at the end of that month, Warne was publicly honoured at a state memorial event at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“We are taking a moment over Christmas to remember Warney. What an incredible man and incredible cricketer. I was truly blessed to spend some incredible time and have such fond memories of the time we spent together. Sending strength and love to his family to his family and kids in Australia,” Smith said in a video message on social media.

“The Shane Warne legacy keeps giving back and on boxing day, at the MCG and 300 outlets all over Australia, they are going to be doing heart checks. Go and get your heart checked, it may save your life. While you are there, think about Warney the great man, because we miss him greatly. I wish you all a very merry Christmas,” he added.

The Shane Warne Legacy organisation was announced earlier in November this year, which offers free heart tests in Australia.

From days one to four of the Test match between Australia and Pakistan, 23 medical-grade health stations will be placed in and around the MCG, aiming to encourage fans and attendees to take the four-minute test, which will measure blood pressure, resting heart rate and an estimate of heart age and diabetes risk.

“We’re delighted to partner with the Shane Warne Legacy for an initiative that will significantly raise awareness about the importance of heart health,” Cricket Australia Chief Executive Nick Hockley had said.

“Shane is greatly missed here in Australia and around the world, and we are grateful to the Shane Warne Legacy and the Warne family in partnering with us to help make a positive difference in his honour. I encourage everyone to come along to the NRMA Insurance Boxing Day Test and take part in the Shane Warne Legacy Heart Tests and to always seek the advice of your medical professional on this and other health issues,” he added.
