Ties are not very common in ODI cricket. The Indian team were forced to settle for a tie despite a fine start by the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma in the first ODI against Sri Lanka of the ongoing three-match series in Colombo on Friday.
India was unable to respond to Sri Lanka’s spin-bowling unit where the skipper Charith Asalanka led from the front to lead their comeback into the game and help them take the draw.
But what were the other instances where the Indian team had drawn an ODI game?
IND vs WI – WACA Ground Perth – 6 Dec 1991
In the Benson & Hedges World Series in 1991 tournament opener, the Indian team led by Mohammed Azharuddin managed to snatch a draw after scoring only 126 runs. The likes of Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath and Subroto Banerjee chipped in with two wickets each to secure their first-ever draw in the 50-over format.
IND vs ZIM – Nehru Stadium Indore – 10 Dec 1992
In the C.A.B Jubilee tournament also known as the Hero Cup in 1992, Zimbabwe led by Andy Flower scored a crucial fifty to help the visitors snatch the draw against the hosts, India.
IND vs ZIM – Boland Park Paarl – 27 Jan 1997
In the Standard Bank International One-Day Tri-Series featuring India, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The latter managed to take the draw yet again thanks to a fine bowling performance by Eddo Brandes who picked up a five-wicket haul to help finish the game in a tie.

During India’s World Cup-winning campaign in 2011, Andrew Strauss took the spotlight with a sensational knock of 158. But the Indian bowlers led by Zaheer Khan were the pick of the Indian bowlers which allowed them to end the game on a draw.
ENG vs IND – Lord’s, London – 11 Sept 2011
During India’s tour in 2011, Ravi Bopara held together England’s middle order to help snatch a draw against the Men in Blue who set a target of 281. But due to interruption due to rain, the target was reduced to 271 via the Duckworth-Lewis method which allowed the hosts to end the game in a tie.
IND vs SL – Adelaide Oval – 14 Feb 2012
In the Commonwealth Bank Tri-series match that took place in Adelaide, the Indian team despite a brilliant knock of 91 by Gautam Gambhir were unable to complete the chase of 236. MS Dhoni also scored a crucial half-century but was one of those rare moments where he was unable to finish the game.
NZ vs IND – Eden Park Auckland – 25 Jan 2014
During India’s tour of New Zealand in 2014, the Kiwis had set up a target of 315 at the end of the first innings. Despite the top-order collapse, the trio of MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja combined to score fifties each to take the game deep and settle for a tie as the 50 overs came to an end.
AFG vs IND – Dubai International Stadium – 25 Sept 2018
The Afghan wicketkeeper-batter, Mohammad Shahzad scored a sensational 124 along with a fifty by Mohammad Nabi to help set a target of 253. Despite the Indian openers, Ambati Rayudu and KL Rahul scoring fifties and Dinesh Karthik chipping in with 44 runs, the Indian middle-order crumbled and the side were all-out on 252 with a ball to spare. Afghanistan’s Nabi, Rashid Khan and Aftab Alam chipped in with two wickets each to claim the draw.
IND vs WI – ACA-VDCA Stadium, Visahkapatnam – 24 Oct 2018
During the West Indies’ tour of India in 2018, Virat Kohli scored a sensational 157 along with Ambati Rayudu chipping in with 71 runs to set a good score of 73 to set a total of 321. But the Windies in response had the likes of Shai Hope who scored a mammoth 123 along with Shimron Hetmeyer’s quickfire 94 to help the Men in Maroon take the draw.
SL vs IND – R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo – 2 Aug 2024
India despite having the big guns in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back in the side, were unable to chase down a score of 231. The Indian captain, Rohit was able to get a fine fifty before his dismissal but the rest of the Indian batting unit was unable to counter Sri Lanka’s spin attack as the Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka put in a fine effort with the ball to take three wickets and steal a draw in the series opener.
