The markets closed in deep red, with the Sensex closing down 471.09 points or 3.66 per cent at 12415.04

Mumbai: The markets closed in deep red in line with other global peers on account of concerns over Yen carry trade unwinding, fall in Chineses and other Asian markets and US mortgage market.

All BSE sector indices ended in negative terrain. Biggest pockets of weakness are capital goods, auto, metal, pharma and IT stocks. Auto and capital goods have seen the deepest cut.

Sensex closed down 471.09 points or 3.66 per cent at 12415.04, and the Nifty down 150.25 points or 4.03 per cent at 3576.5. About 195 shares have advanced, 2335 shares declined, and 29 shares are unchanged. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,270.75 down 375 points or 5.6 per cent.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,194.40 down 272 points or 5 per cent. The BSE FMCG Index lost 3 per cent at 1,701.36. Shaw Wallace, United Spirits, Tata Tea, Dabur India, Nestle closed in red.

The BSE Metal Index was down 4.6 per cent to close at 8,036.49. JSW Steel, SAIL, JindalStainless, Welspun Guj, Jindal Steel, Tata Steel were among the losers. The BSE Bankex was down 3.5 per cent at 6,221.04. Canara Bank, Federal Bank, Oriental Bank, Union Bank, UTI Bank, IOB moved downwards. The BSE Health Care Index was plunged 4.6 per cent at 3,328.40. Nicholas Pirama, Matrix Lab, Divis Labs, Glenmark, Ranbaxy Labs closed lower.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 5.5 per cent at 8,242.83. Praj Industries, KEC Infrastruct, Crompton Greave, Carborundum, SKF India ended lower. The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,755.96 down 5.2 per cent. TVS Motor, Escorts, Ashok Leyland, M&M, Tube Investment, Apollo Tyres, Hind Motors were among the losers.

The BSE IT Index closed at 4,730.30 down 4.5 per cent. Wipro, Moser Baer, Mphasis, Hexaware Tech, HCL Info ended weak. The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 5,935.97 down 4.2 per cent. MRPL, GAIL, HPCL, Reliance, Chennai Petro ended in red.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8546.23 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 33865.52 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3989.93 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 46401.68 crore.
