New Delhi: Amid volatile gyration on account of increased selling pressure witnessed across the board except oil & gas and banking shares, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex ended flat at 13,860.52 points.
The markets succumbed to profit booking amid choppy trade and mixed Asian cues.
Fluctuating over a wide range of more than 200 points during the day, the 30-share Sensex touched an intra-day low of 13,763.39 points before ending the day at 13,860.52, a net fall of 11.19 points or 0.08 per cent from Thursday's close.
Continuing the reported trend of net sales on January 4, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were believed to be the major sellers in several frontline counters at higher levels.
The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) fell by 5.40 points or 0.14 per cent to 3,983.40 from previous close of 3,988.80 points.
The market sentiment was also affected by FII pullout. They reported withdrawals of Rs 202 crore in the Futures & Options and Rs 231 crore (provisional) in the Cash on Thursday.
However, refinery stocks rallied further on the back of falling global crude prices.
The Oil & Gas sector closed up 84 points at 6341. GAIL, HPCL, ONGC were major gainers. Bankex ended up 64 points at 7159. ICICI Bank, Andhra and Canara Bank hold the ground. Consumer Durables index was up 24 points at 3703 level. Blue Star is leading gainer.
Among the losers, Auto index closed down 87 points at 5593. Maruti, ahindra & Mahindra and Sundaram were leading losers. Capital goods ended down 75 points at 9164. Crompton Greaves, Thermax, SKF India are major losers.
FMCG index ended down 12 points at 1874. ITC, Colgate and Dabur lost most. IT index was down 26 points at 5343. Mphasis, Hexaware and Patni lost ground most.
The turnover in NSE cash market was Rs 8758.77 crore and in BSE cash market Rs 4524.21 crore. In the F&O space, turnover was Rs 25256.23 crore.
In Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei ended down by 262 points and Taiwan's Weighted Index by 98.94 points while Hong Kong's Hang Seng recovered by 185.70 points at close.
