New Delhi: Days of chaos at the Indira Gandhi Airport in the Capital may soon be over. A new management, the GMR-Fraport consortium has taken over.
It faces an overwhelming task - most of the modernisation work will have to be done without disrupting the normal functioning at the airport.
The airport developer has earmarked certain key areas on which it will focus. These include-
- Cleaner toilets, and terminals
- More food outlets in the terminal
- Easier access to baggage and baggage trollies
- Bigger parking area and better traffic arrangements
Work on these facilities will start immediately and the results, claims GMR-Fraport, should be visible in the next six months.
But it's the big changes that will take time. A second runway, which will allow planes to land as soon as they enter the airspace of the city should be ready by 2007.
Also in the pipeline is a new terminal building, which will be constructed by 2010, the year the Commonwealth Games come to India.
A unified terminal, it will allow smoother interchange between flights, which means you will be able to catch a domestic as well as international flight from the same building. The terminal will be able to handle 35 million passengers per year.
Passengers will also have a new hotel near the airport.
The big changes, however, come with big price tag. GMR is expected to invest nearly Rs 20,000 crore over the next 15 years.
