New Delhi: Indian exhibitors at the International Tourism Exchange (ITE) in Berlin has said that the country's participation at the world's biggest tourism fair has given its growing tourist trade a boost and created a new image for India.

On the basis of the response received during their five-day promotion campaign at the fair, Indian exhibitors also concluded that the presentation as the "Partner Country" at the ITE will contribute to further growth in inbound travel from Europe and other leading international markets in the coming years.

The presentation, in which over 350 exhibitors and several state governments participated, was quite successful in creating a new image for India in the main tourism generating markets as a new force in global tourism and to create an awareness about the wide-ranging holidaying opportunities the country offers, Sandeep Sinha, manager of Thomas Cook (India) Ltd, Mumbai, said.

Most of the participants said they made bookings for the rest of the year as well as for the next year, received a number of business contacts and established many new contacts with trade visitors from around the world.

Indian exhibitors were also greatly impressed by the interest shown by potential visitors from Germany who thronged the Indian pavilion on Saturday and Sunday, the two days open for the general public.

A new appetite for Indian tourism has been created among the travel trade and potential travellers in Europe and in other regions.

Shantanoo Mohan, manager of the Travel Corporation India (TCI) in Frankfurt told PTI, his company received more bookings and business inquiries than in the previous years and he could also notice greater interest among the German public.

He was confident that German tourist travel to India in the coming years will benefit from the promotion campaign at the ITB.

He also stressed the need for further improving the airport and road infrastructure and enhancing the hotel capacity in order to ensure a long-term tourism business.

Over 130,000 German tourists spent their holidays in India last year, according to the statistics of the India Tourism Office in Frankfurt.
