Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will introduce a new digital feature enabling passengers to use their smartphones as virtual smart cards. With this feature, Delhi metro commuters would not need a physical smart card to travel. This feature will be available through DMRC Momentum 2.0. It will also be available on platforms like Delhi Metro QR ticket facilities like WhatsApp, Paytm, Amazon Pay and One Delhi. It will be an alternative to the existing QR code tickets. The existing QR code is valid only for a single journey. Passengers have to get a new QR code for each journey. Now, they can use the same QR code for multiple journeys through virtual smart cards. DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar told the media, “We are planning to introduce QR for stored value. It will be like a traditional card which will not be limited to a single journey. It will also reduce the number of paper prints.”
The Delhi Metro virtual smart card will work similarly to the physical smart card available at metro counters. It can be stored on a smartphone. Passengers can top up their QR wallet using the DMRC mobile app and use the stored value to generate a QR code for travel. Your virtual smart card balance will be stored safely in the app. Even if you lose your mobile, you can log in on another device to access your card funds.
This new system eliminated the need for purchasing new physical or virtual QR tickets for each trip. It will be user-friendly and safe. The new feature is in trial mode and is likely to be introduced by the end of August or early September, said DMRC. It is the part of ‘store value QR code’ system to provide a seamless ticketing experience to passengers. Earlier this month, the DMRC introduced mobile-based QR tickets through Amazon Pay, as part of its ongoing efforts to digitise the ticketing system. You can select their destination status, make the payment and receive their mobile QR ticket instantly.
Delhi Metro is speeding ahead with its Phase 4 project, completing over 50 per cent of the work on its three main corridors: Majlis Park–Maujpur, Aerocity–Tughlakabad (Golden Line), and Janakpuri West–RK Ashram Marg (Magenta Line).
