13k remains an illusion for Sensex
The 30-share Sensex closed at 12,883.83 points, after hitting an intra-day record high of 12,994.45 points.

Mumbai: After missing the 13,000-point milestone by less than six points, the stock market settled in negative territory on Tuesday with a loss of 44.35 points as funds and general investors booked profits at higher levels.

The markets ended lower after three days of uptrend; the weakness was on the back of negative cues from markets across the globe. However, the markets have outperformed Asian peers, and European markets have also opened weak.

The 30-share Sensex closed at 12,883.83 points, after hitting an intra-day record high of 12,994.45 within the first few minutes of commence of trading.

But the gains were pared as market players preferred to book profits, discounting robust corporate earnings announced by Tata Consultancy, HCL Tech and HDFC Bank, which saw the index dipping to the day's low of 12,819.35 points.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty fell by 7.85 points at 3,716.10, after touching a high of 3,742.50 and a low of 3,691.35.

The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,354.80 down 43.21 points.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,275.98 down 20.42 points.

The BSE Metal Index was up 1.33 per cent to close at 8,908.43. Hind Zinc, SAIL, Sterlite Ind, SW Steel and Tata Steel were among the gainers.

The BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 0.4 per cent to close at 5,954.94. Chennai Petro, HPCL, IOC, GAIL and BPCL were among the top losers.

The BSE Bankex was down 0.3 per cent at 6,238.95. Kotak Mahindra, HDFC Bank, Karnataka Bank, IOB and Andhra Bank moved downwards.

The BSE Health Care Index was down 0.9 per cent at 3,624.90. Sterling Bio, Nicholas Piramal, Glenmark, Orchid Chemical, Ranbaxy Labs and Apollo Hospital closed lower.

The BSE FMCG Index slipped 1.12 per cent at 2,047.55. HLL, Colgate, Nirma, Britannia and Nestle closed in red.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.02 per cent at 8,467.74 Praj Industries, Alfa Laval, HEG, Crompton Greave and Dredging Corp closed lower.

The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,480.32 down 0.1 per cent. Tube Investment, Amtek Auto, MRF, Cummins and MICO were among the losers.

The BSE IT Index closed flat at 4,848.40.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6865.96 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 26249.91 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3830.96 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 36946.83 crore.
