The surge in cybercrime rate continues to rise. In yet another cyber scam, a Bengaluru-based software engineer lost Rs 13.5 lakh to a man posing as a recruiter. The victim was looking for a job in the aviation sector. The techie (43) realised that he had been cheated after waiting around a month for the appointment letter. The techie had fulfilled all the formalities as suggested to him during the hiring process by the scammers.

According to the complaint, Sacchidananda BS, a resident of Anjanapura, had applied for a job in the aviation sector for a company a month ago. On August 16, Sacchidananda received a call from an unknown person. The caller introduced himself as a representative of a leading aviation company. The caller said that he was looking to hire for a senior role and he offered Sacchidananda, a salary of Rs 46 lakh per annum, The Hindu reported.

The news report further elaborated that Sacchidananda was even interviewed online by the alleged imposter before being selected. Narrating about the incident, he stated in the complaint that he was asked to submit documents including money. Only after paying money, his job offer letter would be rolled out. On the pretext of medical expenses, and document verification, the scammer kept asking Sacchidananda to pay up.

When the amount eventually added up to Rs 13.54 lakh, the accused cut off all communication with Sacchidananda. The software engineer waited for about a month for the offer letter before approaching the police. Currently, the accused is on the run and investigating officers from the cybercrime department are on the lookout for the accused.

In a similar incident, in August, another 30-year-old techie from Bengaluru lost Rs 2.6 lakh after he struck up a friendship with a woman he met on a dating app. As per his complaint, the couple reportedly would call each other on video via WhatsApp. During a few of these calls, the woman made the man strip and recorded the video using it later to blackmail him.

Recently, in February 2023, a 29-year-old homemaker from Andrahalli disclosed to Cubbon Park police that she too had been a victim of online scam. Her husband had initiated contact on her behalf through a messaging app, sharing her contact details. This started a chain of events where a woman identifying herself as Neeta Thakur promised her an attractive work-from-home position and handsome salary in hand. However, this turned out to be a scam, Business Today reported.
