As this technology gains traction, expect more motorcycle manufacturers to explore AMT systems in the future.

Yamaha has introduced a new Automated Manual Gearbox (AMT) to make sporty riding even better.

This new AMT will be featured in some of Yamaha’s upcoming models.

The Y-AMT gearbox is lightweight, only 2.8kg. It’s controlled through switches on the handlebar. On the left side, there are see-saw shift levers for manual gear changes using your thumb and index fingers.

On the right side, there’s a mode switch to toggle between D+ and D. D+ mode offers a sporty ride, letting you rev higher before shifting gears, while D mode gives smoother shifts, perfect for city rides.

According to Bikewale, this setup eliminates the need to use your foot to change gears. Even in automatic mode, riders can manually shift gears with the see-saw lever if needed.

While Yamaha’s AMT is new, similar technology has been used by other brands. Honda’s Africa Twin has a Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), and KTM recently teased an AMT for its Super Adventure models. BMW is also developing an automatic transmission for its R 1300 GS.

More two-wheeler manufacturers may explore AMT technology in the future, given the promising research and development data.
